Enjoy the Fall and keep your Stoma Safe

This is a great time of year.  The weather starts to cool down after a long and hot summer and people start to go outside more and more.  It is customary for lots of long walks in the evening and for sightseeing of all the Fall leaves.  That is why this is my favorite time of year and I love spending it with those that I love.  My favorite thing is bonfires at night and all the fun conversations that are had around a fire.  What I am not a fan of is the thought of missing out on all of this by being afraid that my stoma and ostomy gear will fail me.  There is a big and true fear that can creep into your life if you let it.  That is something that keeps people from being more social and can make them feel tons of anxiety.  That is simply bad all around and can impair your health.  So I want everyone to be able to overcome this and my personal thoughts on how to do this and stay safe during all these times is to believe in your gear.

I think confidence in life is key and that goes for many different aspects.  You may not even have confidence in yourself, but if you believe that your ostomy gear is going to work 100% of the time and have no issues, then it certainly helps you overcome the fear of being outside with friends and family.  That is why I am a huge advocate of testing your stuff.  I don't think you should but something new that someone said was the best product and find out that it does not work with your stoma shape and timing at all.  That is just crazy and I think we are all different and I believe in being smart about my gear.

Yes, I am a gear junky and research way too much on all types of gear.  But this means that I also like to test all types of gear to find out what works best for me, my body, and my family.  So when it comes to being active and enjoying the outdoors, I wanted to make sure that my ostomy gear was up to the task.  I wanted the perfect bag size and cut out seals for being active or for enjoying a nice bonfire. I wanted to ensure that my gear would not fail and I tested the life out of it.  If I thought I was going for a walk in the park with my family or friends, the gear I was going to wear I took a jog with a week before.  I simply practice for the worst so that if I end up doing something harder that I don't get any issues.

I also suggest being confident in your gear by talking to who makes it.  There are a few major manufactures of ostomy gear and they are actually really good at talking to people about their stuff.  I have to spend a few hours on the phone over the years figuring out what will work best for the situations I want to be in.  These companies took the time to help me out and even send free samples.  I have used them and purchased a good amount from them because of their willingness to help me. Be confident and enjoy your Fall too!
